To prove that his way of thinking is keeping him from moving on, Captain Delano advices him that, â€Å"the past is past; why moralize upon it? † Delano is letting him know that he can’t hold himself back from a great future based on a rotten past. Although selfishness is looked upon as a sinful thought, pleasing one’s self is still considered a good intention. Delano comforts Cereno by indirectly assuring him that he should never regret what has been done, because during the moment of that action, there was always a reasonable purpose to be followed. Those experiences taught him how to become a better human being; hence, if he didn’t go through any of that, he would not have the current regretful feelings he has at the end of the novel. Delano alludes to Benito that if the world is able to metamorphose, then so can he; â€Å"See, yon bright sun has forgotten it all, and the blue sea, and the blue sky; these have turned over new leaves. † These are all forms of our dynamic nature which juxtapose Benito’s static character. Don Benito comes to realize that the population he had once tortured is the same as those who have morally and mentally saved him. This is translated when Captain Delano asks him, â€Å"you are saved; what has cast such a shadow upon you? † and Cereno replies that â€Å"the Negro† is what has cast the shadow upon him. The Negroes aboard the San Dominick represent â€Å"blackness†. Therefore, Cereno is implying that blackness is the evil within human nature, which the black ethnic group metaphorically represents. Blackness is a connotation of an actual color, and in this case, it is also the live image of what us humans believe stands for worthlessness and diabolic. This comparison is an oxymoron to what Cereno is referring to. If you recall, Cereno had stated that he was saved because of this blackness; which I had just mentioned was unholy. This contradiction establishes how there is no future without the past; how you cannot grow without a base to keep yourself standing. There is no need for change if there is nothing destructive keeping you from reaching your goals. Cereno believes he himself was the destructiveness keeping the Negroes from fulfilling their wishes of being able to see their families again. This brings about the empathy that the reader feels towards him in the end. With this passage being at the end of the novel, it clearly exhibits a stable theme for the novel as a whole. Race seems to be the common denominator throughout the story. This is supported by the fact that it was written during the 1850’s; when slavery was most popular. Melville seems to realize that this sort of power over other humans was morally wrong and he did not agree with what was socially acceptable. Our generations have been taught that we should never judge a book by its cover, therefore, we should not judge a man by his color. You should never underestimate a man based on what he doesn’t have, but rather estimate his power based on what he does have. Now that Don Benito Cereno comes to terms with the equality of all men, he took the first step into admitting his mistakes and chooses to follow a leader rather than being one. The scholarships all have different selection criteria and award amounts, and you'll have to submit some supplemental materials based on the awards you want to apply for. The application is pretty streamlined so that you can submit all materials at once. These scholarships are open to students of Vietnamese descent. Tips for Your Own Scholarship Search Hopefully, you now have a good start when it comes to looking for scholarships for minority students. This list of awards is just the beginning, though - follow these strategies to optimize your chances of winning the most scholarship money possible. Do Your Own Research The awards listed above are some of the biggest andbest-known scholarships for minorities, but that doesn't mean they're the only ones out there. If you do your own research, you'll probably find information on smaller or more targeted scholarships. Why bother going after these awards? The more specific the eligibility requirements (if you meet them), the less competition you'll probably have. The same goes forscholarships with smaller payouts. Try googling"scholarships in [your local area]" or "scholarships for [your specific ethnicity group]". You might be surprised at what you find! Just one caveat - beware of any scholarship applications that ask you to submit payment information or info that seems irrelevant or too private. They may be scams, so make sure an application is for a legitimate award before you submit. A good excuse to spend some quality time at your favorite cafe. Apply Broadly This piece of advice goes hand-in-hand with the last one: the more scholarships you apply to, the better your odds of winning some money. Try to submit as many applications as possible, and make sure to look into non-minority scholarships as well. You might start with 2-3 applications to "big" competitive scholarships and 5-7 applications to smaller or more targeted awards. If you can do more than that; however, more power to you! Just don't let it get in the way of your schoolwork or extracurricular activities - those are more important. Be Mindful of Deadlines As you may have noticed by reading the descriptions above, there's no standard scholarship deadline. The earlier you do your scholarship research, the more likely it is that you'll meet the deadlines for all scholarship programs you may be interested in. Try keeping a spreadsheet with all this information so you can submit applications on time. Make sure to cushion your timeline (add an extra 6-8 weeks) if you have to ask for letters of recommendation. What's Next? The Life and Poetry of Edwin Arlington Robinson Essay Poetry is the rhythm of every writers soul. It varies in distinction from one artist or poet to the next. Poems dont generally appeal to the greatest number of individuals, and they could hardly be regarded as a popular or esoteric form of entertainment. But the writer Edwin Arlington Robinson; and the proficient body of work hes accomplished in his poetry over the extent of his writing career, and perhaps essentially, his life, appears to negate or depart from the aforementioned sentiment. The three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, evokes in his poetry, aspects of humanity which most every individual are able to identify with. Robinsons capacity to encompass and evoke the aforementioned sentiments in his poetry has led him to be regarded and aptly dubbed as a â€Å"people poet,† and by the time of his death on 1935, the writer whose poetry was admired by president Theodore Roosevelt himself, was widely regarded and recognized as a leading American poet of his era and generations to come, establishing him along the likes and ranks of fellow American poet, Robert Frost. Edwin Arlington Robinson was born the oldest son of Edward Robinson and Mary Palmer on December 22, 1869 in Gardner, Maine to a particularly well-to-do family. He had two brothers siblings who didnt share or enjoy his particular successes. One of them was a doctor who eventually became a drug addict, and the other was an alcoholic who fueled his addiction by squandering the family fortune. Robinson did not marry like his brothers did, but he claimed to have fallen in love more than once, and despite shyness, the poet had a significant number of close friends (Donaldson). Robinson learned to acknowledge early on that poetry was his calling. Although his initial works were not as well received as his later writings, the poet nonetheless pursued and consummated this particular interest which he claimed was the only thing he knew how to do. He took classes in French, English and Shakespeare in Harvard for a brief period of two years until he was forced to leave at the instance of his fathers death. He wrote copiously and exhaustively after his fathers funeral, and much to his initial reluctance, he obligingly took the role of becoming man of the house (Porter). Like many writers, artists and poets, and despite being born into a rich family, Robinson suffered through a period of poverty which lasted several years, mainly because his brother had already depleted the fortune they were born into, and because as a writer, or poet, he wasnt exactly afforded the highest of compensations, let alone was regularly paid or published at all. Writing was Robinsons way of coping with circumstances which were presented to him, and his poetry served as a vivid and artistic reflection, documentation, or perhaps, personal translation of reality as it occurred and unfolded in his private sphere, and elsewhere surrounding him. Robinson was among the first poets to write of ordinary people, of the seeming mundane, trite and hackneyed instances which occurred to individuals in the course of existence on a day-to-day basis. He wrote of butchers, misers, store clerks, and similar seemingly insignificant individuals with a creative eloquence which rendered the ordinary people he was referring to as exquisitely and achingly beautiful pieces and embodiments of humanity in a world that would otherwise be viewed as insufferable and humdrum. He captured the plight of every working man, although he was not necessarily one of them. And the particular theme afforded by his poetry differed from what other writers and poets in 19th century America were expressing and indulging in, this separated Robinson from the pack and established him as a distinct and unique voice of his era (Donaldson). Robinsons close attention and sensitivity to rhythm, harmony and sound is largely evident in every word, line and stanza which constitute his poetry. This sentiment is most evident in his perhaps most widely recognized poem entitled â€Å"Richard Cory,† a lyrical verse neatly written and composed of traditional rhyming verses which simply begged to be read aloud. Its content, however, is in no way traditional for its time, and as what has been already mentioned, the verses, when read aloud, are delightfully and enormously pleasant to listen to. In it, Robinson relates an intriguing narration of a man named – as the title already connotes – Richard Cory, who appeared to be graced with all the fine, fortunate, and maybe even enviable characteristics a gentleman of Robinsons era could possess. This much is recounted throughout the extent of the relatively short, four-stanza poem, which culminates in an exquisitely tragic irony which evinces the talent and creative genius of Edwin Arlington Robinson, the poem begins by relating: Whenever Richard Cory went down town, / We people on the pavement looked at him: / He was a gentleman fromsole to crown, / Clean-favoured and imperially slim † (Robinson). Although the poem doesnt necessarily center on the previously mentioned theme which runs rife in Robinsons work – that is to say, the plight of the common working man – it nonetheless incorporates a sentiment of the said themed ordinariness in the verse when Robinson, or the narrating voice in the poem pronounces â€Å"we people on the pavement looked at him The tone of the poem then appears to be told from the perspective of the proletariat, the working class, the common people, or to put it crudely, the poor. The poet remains faithful to the individuals which exist as the central concern or topic of most of his other poems. And while Robinson may be speaking from the point of view of the common man in â€Å"Richard Cory,† he affords no prejudiced or ill view towards his rich protagonist; but instead paints a good natured, pleasantly mannered, sympathetic human being who just happened to be wealthy. Painting the person that is Richard Cory as admirable, instead of enviable. Of his protagonist he writes: â€Å"And he was rich, yes, richer than a king, / And admirably schooled in every grace: / In fine – we thought that he was everything / To make us wish that we were in his place. † (Robinson). The poet plays out every line with a neat and simple lyrical recounting, meant to be read for what it is, not camouflaging behind complex play of words and metaphors, or needing to impress under a facade of flamboyant and pretentious words and lyric. The beauty of Robinsons poetry, as evident in Richard Cory exists as such, neat and simple in form and structure, but lyrical, engaging, and addresses a fundamental aspect of humanity significant in any and every era. The concluding verse of â€Å"Richard Cory† affirms this assumption by divulging: â€Å"So on we worked and waited for the light, / And went without meat and cursed the bread, / And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet in his head. † (Robinson). Much like every great work of art, Robinsons poetry – as evident in the poem that is Richard Cory – provokes reflection. It asks individuals to consider the irony which exists and abounds in every persons reality, however fictional its context may be. It also drips of intrigue and tragedy, which are perhaps central elements of piquing human interest, but this is done with a certain preciousness, and even elegance which makes for a reflective and affecting, as opposed to â€Å"entertaining† piece. The culmination of Richard Corys life in suicide exists as both a mystery and an obvious or telling episode in a persons life, both in fiction and the waking reality. It presents a view of humanity which may not appear particularly novel or surprising for most of us today, but is something which should nonetheless be paid close attention to. â€Å"Richard Cory† embodies the precious simplicity as well as affecting irony and genuine heart which exists in Robinsons poetry. The poem affords readers an excerpt of a seeming rudimentary, but infinitely affecting piece of humanity which exists in the confines of rhyme, lyric, harmony that is essentially Edwin Arlington Robinsons poetry. Another fitting example of the poets genius which exists perhaps not as famously and to a different degree, but in a nonetheless exquisite and affecting manner, is Robinsons ode to a fellow poet, eponymously entitled, â€Å"Walt Whitman. † In it, Robinson relates, in tones akin to that of a great admirer of Whitmans, his sentiments on the instance of the esteemed humanist poets death. He begins the poem by pronouncing, â€Å"The master songs are ended, and the man / A name; and so is love, and life, and death Last night it was the song that was the man / But now it is the the man that is the song. † (Robinson). His admiration for Whitman as a fellow poet, a writer of songs and ballads of humanity is evinced in the beauty of the said verse, and in lines in which he speaks of Whitmans poetry and voice as â€Å"too pure for us – too powerfully pure, too lovingly triumphant, and too large (Robinson). These verses serve as a fitting poetic eulogy and remembrance of an equally remarkable poet. The poem culminates in a telling and powerful verse which exists in the following lines, â€Å"No songs are ended that are ever sung, / Mens letters on proud marble or on sand, We write them there forever. † (Robinson). The aforementioned lines hold a significant amount of truth, not only to Whitmans poetry, but to Robinsons and to every individual who commits to making concrete their passions as well. Edwin Arlington Robinson is regarded as a major American poet for this very reason, because the poetry he creates is able to reflect and evoke a great deal of humanity, and at the same time, impact on the realities which occur to every human being as well. The subtle and simple manner by which he approaches poetry, and the visceral and affecting characteristic which is evoked therein, establishes Robinsons prominence, and affords his words an enduring and affecting timeless significance to individuals and the better part of humanity.

Inconsistencies in Hume's Empirical Thought    In his Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, David Hume attempts to uncover the ultimate truth about where our knowledge comes from.   This leads him to suggest that all our ideas and knowledge arise from outward experiences and sensations.   He attempts to prove this by solving the "problem of induction."   I disagree with Hume's ideas, and in this essay I will explain why.   I shall begin by explaining the problem of induction, and the sceptical doubts Hume raises concerning the inductive process.   I will then explain how Hume solves the problem.   Finally, I will conclude by offering a critique of Hume's doctrine, and explain why I find it to be inconsistent. INTRODUCTION Television and Children: Today, TV is acquiring a strangehold on the lives of the children. The impact of television has been accentuated by the rapid nuclearisation of Indian middle class homes. Children who increasingly come home to empty homes in urban India watch a great deal of television much of it unsupervised. Television is threatening the minds of children and weakening the influence of parents on children. Television the entertainer, is more popular than television the informer and the educator.Children develop basic television literacy by simply watching television; no one needs to be taught to â€Å"read† television’s symbolic code. This audion-visual medium predominates in children’s life very early. Television viewing is often part of their everyday social behavior. It is decreasing community participation. Children made use of whoever was nearby; as joint participants and as a source of information or as live audience to childrenâ€⠄¢s comments. It seems that lack of provision of special activities which children do away from home is one significant factor in the amount of television they watch.Families with more money to spend on recreation and those who live in areas where a range of facilities are available and those who can provide alternatives to television watching are at an advantage. Television is changing what children do with their free time and even the nature of interaction within the home and between the members of their family. Playtime is adjusted to watch television so is sleep and study. Television became the central factor around which children and parents schedule their work time. The maximum re-scheduling is in the case of play.Seventy seven percent of the children interviewed by Sevanti Ninan a media researcher, said they organized their play according to television programmes. Eating did not need much re-scheduling. They ate as they watched. Children are sufficiently addicted to take in t heir favorite programmes. Children constitute the major section of the viewing audience. An interested and willing audience is more receptive to learning than a group of audience who have been forced into attendance. Television for children has become a focal point of their lives.Television is considered a remedy for problematic children. Just as ads bestowed a new kind of power upon child consumers. Television seems to distrupt conventional power dynamics between child and adult. Popular media complained that the television image has usurped the authority previously held by parents and teachers. As numerous youngsters indicated that they often watched programmes which their parents disapproved them to watch. In India most of these fears are compounded by the fact that the children watch mostly film based programmes.If there is one unifying force in Indian, it is the mania for watching movies, irrespective of age, class, language, sex, or background for the vast majority of children , Hindi films and film songs are the first choice and with the kind of satellite boom that India is witnessing today, there is no lack of films on television. In the past, anxieties about parental control had to do with the fact that television was heavily promoted in families with children. During the 1950’s Western countries manufactured and retailers discovered children were a lucrative consumer market for the sale of household commodities.Even at this young age, children can exercise choice. As one of the newest household items television was quickly recognized for its potential appeal to young children. The number of television sets tend to be high in families with children more than childless couples did. Audience research showed that parents believed that television could keep their children of the streets and thus from trouble. Television has ushered in an information revolution. It has revolutionized the concept of leisure in India. Children are l ikely to be most vulnerable population to be influenced by the contents of television transmission.Television acts as a source of information, education, entertainment and consumerism and it is through these functions that it is likely to influence the viewer. Research on television and children have concluded that television has positive and negative consequences on children. On the other hand, TV viewing helps in seeking knowledge about different things and it inhibits child’s imaginative capabilities. Revolution in the Indian advertising scene: 1980’s have turned out to be dynamic decade for Indian advertisers and marketers. The introduction of color television during Asiad in Sept. 982, and later the emergence of serials culminating in perennial favourites like Ramayana and Mahabharata along with the realization by advertisers and marketers to capitalize on this electronic medium with its tremendous visual impact when advertising crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark, in 1988-89 from only Rs. 20 crore. Advertisements directly beamed at children either as consumers or as influencers has now become an important market strategy in India today. Kids are highly skilled, however, at getting their parents to purchase what they can’t buy for themselves.In this sense, they represent considerable buying behavior. Children do not react to advertisements in a vacuum. They’re influenced by what Mummy and Daddy say, what he/she knows about the product from television, friends and other sources. The first marketers to exploit television for their child oriented product was Food Specialities Ltd. , for their Maggie noodles, which was launched in 1983, March. According to a study conducted by the Business World Magazine (Feb. 1986) it became the most successful consumer product.Another kid directed product that met with a success was in the 80’s was Rasna softdrink concentrate made by Pioma Industries Ltd. They blantantly exploited the lovable c hild artistes and the powerful medium of television. Who doesn’t remember, â€Å"I Love You Rasna† lisped by child artist Ankita Jhaveri. Their sales increased from Rs. 80 lakhs in 1982 to 25 crores in 1988. Television became the major advertising medium followed by magazines and newspapers. Biscuits and toys are two major child-oriented products that have undergone a sea change during this decade.The toy market in India is now valued at Rs. 70 crores in this organized sector alone with a growth potential of 20-25%. Not surprisingly, television is the medium of choice for most advertisers targeting the child market. Many even quite young children watch adult programming and are consequently exposed to advertisements normally aimed at adults. When it comes to children’s perceptions of television advertising, it is clear that very young children see television in a conceptual vacuum in which they cannot distinguish one from the other and know that an advertisement is trying to sell them something.They are, however, unlikely to have any useful information base, or concept of price and value, by which they can make valid judgments of the television ads. Selectivity in viewing commercials increases with age. Another reason why television is so important, apart from its window to the world position is that it is the child’s most important sources of information is which allows the use of all the effects that appeal to kids. Children have a very low boredom threshold; a penchant for images and bright colors and an ability to absorb more details than adults in a shorter period of time (Travel weekly 9 Sept. 1991).The boredom threshold of a child is frustrating low; (Marketing week 21 Aug. 1992. ) Marketing consumer products to children; Advertising to children is no plain task. They are unpredictable, difficult to research, though highly conscious of things around them. Marketing communication that is straight, simple, honest and filled wit h fun is most likely to win their confidence as customers. There are various strategies in marketing to children. A direct appeal in which the promotion is directly oriented to kids for products like pencils, chocolates, soft drinks, etc. Another approach is directed to the parents through the child.The child is used as hook to buy the product, for all sort of products including consumer durables like Videocon washing machines. Children have thus become the innocent and hidden persuaders. Babies have been employed with winning effect in ads for ages, by Glaxo, Nestle and Johnson and Johnson. The Murphy Radio baby is still on calendars all over India. Children influence parents to buy products of their choice. Children themselves make purchases of goods and services for their personal use and satisfaction. With the nuclearisation of families, children are coming home to empty homes and end up watching longer hours of television.Parents who find less time to spend with their children feel guilty and adopt a softer attitude towards requests from children ranging from cereals to computers. Mothers perceive that television advertisements influences the children and they estimate the effects of commercials by the frequency with which their children attempt to influence the purchase at home. Parents are now vulnerable to their appeal and positive parental response varies depending up on the nature of appeal used by children. According to a study conducted by D.Stone who was the Marketing Manager of the London College of Printing and distributive trades. The study was titled â€Å"Advertising and Children†. When he asked the parents, How often does your child influence you on deciding on your purchases? Displacement factors need to be taken into account when assessing the impact of advertising on children. The most important dispositional factor influencing the affects of TV ad is age, first class and third class children are more strongly affected by TV ads than children from fifth grade children.The greatest impact of television advertising on child is felt in their language, according to teachers of Delhi school where the study was conducted by Namita Unnikrishnan. Significant pretest increased for the experimental group in articulating intent of the commercial. It suggests that parents can be motivated successfully to appreciate their children in understand ing the TV content and that they will be most effective when tapping comprehension within the child’s zone of proximal development. The relationship between TV exposure and physical activity among the 6th grade children. Francis, Lorna Lee, Ph.D University of Orgeon, 1983. Results: indicated that while there was statistically significant correlation between TV viewing time and physical activity, the magnitude of the relationship was insufficient to be of practical significance. There was also no significant relationship between TV viewing time and level of physical fitness. Children’s physical activity and their physical fitness were relatively independent of the TV viewing time. The perceived influence of TV on achievement in children and achievement and adolescents in Thailand. Chompaisal, Swangchit, Ph.D Illinois State University 1994. The research was conducted to study the perceived influence of TV viewing on the school achievement of children and adults in Thaila nd. Study based on a sample of 2520 children and adults from 6 regions of Thailand during second semester of 93-94. Results: Reveal that the children and adults spend an average of 21 hours a week in viewing television. Students who spend fewer hours watching television have higher school achievement. Parents who monitor their child’s television viewing contribute to better school achievement.Factorial analysis shows no statistically significant relationship between motivation of television viewing and the general performance at school. Cartoons and computer games have an inordinate amount of violence and children soon get desensitized to the violence.Questions about effects of television advertisements on television have frequently been raised by Television critics. Investigators have examined the effects of TV programmes on children, but little published research exists in this area. Conversely much research has examined effects of television Advertisements, but the focus has been on adults rather than on children. It would be native to use these sources to derive hypothesis for research studies of effects of commercials on children. The content, structure and repetitive presentation of the commercials messages are different from programmes.So the effects on children and adults should be different. Moreover, hypothesis about effects of television advertisements on children simply cannot be derived from research with adults. A fourteen-year old boy was killed in Oct’97 when he tried to emulate the bungee-jumping shown in a popular TV soft drink adverti sement. What is ads doing to children and what is the impact of TV on children’s need to be given a thorough study in this era of consumerism. After all children are the most avid watches of Television programmes. It has become a central point in their lives.For all these reasons, the overall purpose of the present research programme is to explain the effects of television advertisement on children between 7-14 years of age. Objectives of the study: To study the viewership of children’s programme on DD National, DD-II, Sony Entertainment TV and Eenadu TV. To study the awareness, exposure and comprehension and recall of ads. To study the influence of advertisements on kids buying behavour. Scope: Two schools one located in Hyderguda St. Pauls Boys High School and the other is located in Chapel Road, Sujatha Public Girls School.Kids from 5th class to 10th Class where chosen for the study. Methodology The procedure adopted for the collection of the data was a questionnair e consisting of 17 close ended questions and two sub-questions and two open ended questions were asked. Universe The Universe for the study was two schools. The classes chosen from each school were six. The Universe for the study had 600 students. Sample A stratified random sample of the universe has been taken out of these 600 students. 120 students were taken as the sample for the study. That is around 20 percent. The sample consisted of equal number of boys and girls.Ten each from each class were taken. The questionnaire were later analyzed and tabulated accordingly. The ads were monitored for this research on four channels. DD National: Viewership and reach are the highest in India. It airs its programmes in Hindi the national language of India. Children’s Programmes; Great Expectations and Heman. DD-II: Viewership and reach many not the same as DD National. Airs a lot of children’s programmes everyday from 05. 00 pm to 07. 00. These include a variety of cartoon sh ows very popular with children. Children’s Programmes: Boy meet world, Flash Gordon, Blossom, Telesoccer,Rimba’s Island, Our friend the Dolphins, Quack Pack Spiderman, Mickey and Friends, Green Teen Quiz, Dennis the Menance, Jaldi Jaldi Game show, Goof Troops, Chip and Dale, Super Human Syber Squad, Heman and the Masters of the Universe. Sony Entertainment Television: Airs its programmes in Hindi. It is a satellite channel. Airs children’s programmes every day from 05 00 pm to 07 30 pm. The programmes include comedies and cartoon shows. Children’s Programmes: Bewitched, Different Strokes, Silver Spoons, He-man, Real Ghost Busters, who is the boss? Eenadu Television:Regional Channel Airs it programmes in te local language Telugu. The usual stuff films and film songs dominate the channel. Very less children’s programmes are aired. Children’s programmes: Charlie Chaplin, Bhale Denver, Stone Boy, Baboi Dennis. The ads that are aired during these programmes were monitored from 01. 12. 97 to 15. 12. 97. About 41. 6% of the respondent watch about two hours of television daily. Children’s movies dominated the viewing time of the chidren (42 %). Followed closely by film-based programmes. 42% of the respondent liked cartoon shows. 76. 9% of the respondents said they liked ads but interesting thing to note is that though some did say they didn’t like advertisements they still could recall ads. 65. % of the respondents said they liked chocolate advertisements closely followed by 23% of clother’s and footwear ads. They liked to watched advertisements with children in action and equally adventure advertisements. It was closely followed by advertisements with sportsmen and film-stars (girls liked them more than the boys).Most os the respondents felt that advertisements did not influence them to buy the products, but few that it did influence them very much. More number of boys said that they will not pressurize their parents to buy the products where girls were equal in their positive and negative response. 5% of the respondents gave ambiguous response to the question that do they insist on buying the product af ter watching the advertisement 70% said ‘yes’ they do but for the earlier question they said they do not pressurize their parents to buy the product. 65% of the respondent said they received pocket money to spend on themselves. Majority of the respondent’s boys and girls said they saved the money that they got as pocket money. Most of the respondents recalled chocolate advertisements more than any other.All the girls recalled ’Perk’ advertisement more than any other. Important thing was that respondents who said they did not like advertisements too recognized at least three to four advertisements. Suggestions for further study: Subsequent research must fulfill methodological requirements (1) In order to investigate earlier development in watching behavioral reactions to advertisements, sampling must include children younger than those in those in the present research that is from three to seven year old. 2) Sample can be increased from a mere 25 per cent to around 50 percent so that generalizations can be made more freely. (3) Sampling can be done even from rural areas. There is a boom in television viewing in rural areas too. (4) Research is needed to determine why some children and adolescents too develop negative feeling towards advertisements. (5) Research needs to be done into why younger children have high attention span of advertisements than older children that is children above 14 years have a less attention span.

The movie ‘The Hunger Games’ directed by Gary Ross is an extraordinary fictional tale. A tale set in a futuristic dystopia society called ‘Panem’. This nation is divided into 12 districts and a capitol. Every year each district must offer two tributes a male and a female that must fight to the death until there is one remaining tribute out of twenty-four, who later becomes a victor. An interesting character in the film is Katniss Everdene, the films heroine. A District 12 citizen, katniss’s will to survive and furious attitude is shown from the moment we first see her on screen. Throughout the games we see Katniss challenging the regime and having the will to survive. Even before Katniss enters the games we see her take a maternal role over Primrose, her younger sister. Katniss provides a living for them both. The level of maturity shown through the character Katniss makes her intriguing to the audience, making her and interesting character. Throughout the film, character Katniss provided the audience with a sense of maternal values and wholesome family principals. As food is scarce in District 12, Katniss hunts in the nearby district in order for her family to survive, despite the dictatorship her life is ruled by. A full shot of Katniss daringly venturing into a neighbouring district to provide food, shows us just how bad the situation is for the district. The fence that separates the districts can be seen for an immense way, and the close up of the high voltage sign provides us with the feeling of what Katniss would do for her family. This restores a sense of familiar family values to the audience. The director Gary Ross has deliberate used Katniss’s character to involve our own emotions and connect closer to the film through Katniss’s maternal instinct to keep her family alive. Gary Ross positioned the viewers to feel for her family and the community who are run by greedy sadistic dictators and we feel disgusted for those who try and run others lives through the enforcement of fear. Gary Ross uses Katniss to relate to our problems and us, viewers can understand the challenges Katniss goes through cause they are much like our own. Katniss show the audience how everybody has the natural instinct to survive when put in front of difficult situations. Before Katniss enters the games she comes across as stubborn and making friends is not her strong point. Katniss portrays a sympathetic and loving emotion during the games once Hamish, her mentor gave her wise words, ‘you have to make people like you’. Hamish being a past tribute, who became a victor, knows how the games must be played to win. A mid shot on Katniss’s face when told this captures her emotions in a way the lets the audience know the discomfort the news has brought her. Katniss preformed well during the games, and upheld a persona leading up to the games. Together Katniss and Peeta, the male tribute from district 12 forged a fake love for the satisfaction of the government. In a critical moment in the film after Peeta gets injured they use their ‘love’ to receive medication, A single kiss helped them get the suplies they needed with a note attached reading â€Å"you call that a kiss†. Kat niss is willing to adapt to lying in order to survive. As the audience, we are positioned to understand to understand her point of view, Katniss does not enjoy killing, nor approve however in order to survive she is willing to do what is nessercery, and as viewers we asked left asking what would we do in this situation? Through Katniss’s character, Gary Ross has led the audience to see how natural human emotions have led Katniss to rebel. A rebellion against the regime ordered by the totalatarian government. When a young girl named Rue from district 11 is murdered due to a consequence of the games, Katniss comforts her as she would with her younger sister, Primrose, this positions the audience to feel sympathy towards the tributes of the games, especially young Rue and we feel ashamed towards the form of entertainment enforced by the government.
